Special Exhibition: 11.04.2025 - 14.09.2025: YOKO ONO: DREAM TOGETHER
Experience the interactive exhibition YOKO ONO: DREAM TOGETHER at the Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin from 11 April to 14 September 2025. The special exhibition thematises and presents special works from all creative phases of the artist Yoko Ono. The highlights of this exhibition include ‘Mend Piece’, in which you symbolically repair broken ceramic cups. The interactive installation ‘Play It By Trust’ is also at the centre of the exhibition, where visitors can challenge each other with only white chess pieces.
Ono's messages of peace are the focus of this exhibition: experience historical works such as the ‘Bed-In for Peace’ or the song ‘Hiroshima Sky Is Always Blue’. The interactive puzzle ‘SKY / WATER’ also turns visitors into participants in a collective work of art. Learn more about the works, the creative phases and the background in this exhibition. Take the opportunity to experience Yoko Ono's art up close.
Exhibition: Extreme Tension. Art between Politics and Society Collection of the Nationalgalerie 1945 – 2000
From 18 November 2023 to 28 September 2025, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin is presenting a fascinating exhibition of artworks from the Nationalgalerie's collection entitled "Extreme Tension. Art between Politics and Society Collection of the Nationalgalerie 1945 – 2000". It documents the political and social upheavals of the post-war period and allows visitors to experience art as a mirror of social developments. The exhibition sheds light on the decades from 1945 to 2000 - an era characterised by war, social revolution and technological upheaval. The works on display illustrate how artists reacted to the issues of their time. Paintings, sculptures, photographs and films address socio-critical debates and personal fates.
Exhibition: Gerhard Richter: 100 Works for Berlin
In the exhibition 100 Works for Berlin, the long-term loans of the Gerhard Richter Art Foundation to the Neue Nationalgalerie are presented for the first time. The central work of this exhibition is the cycle "Birkenau" from 2014, consisting of four large-format, abstract paintings. The Birkenau cycle is the result of a long and intensive engagement with the Holocaust and its representability.
The basis for Gerhard Richter's works are four photographs from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, which the artist transferred to four canvases using charcoal and oil paint, then gradually painted over them in abstract. With each layer of paint, the painted pattern disappeared a little more until the pattern was finally no longer visible. A large, four-part mirror, placed opposite the four Birkenau paintings and thus creating another level of reflection, also forms part of the work. In addition to the Birkenau cycle, almost 90 other works by Gerhard Richter from several creative phases since the 1980s will be shown. Works such as "Occupied House" (1989), "4900 Colours" (2007) and "Strip" (2013/2016) are also on view in the exhibition.
Exhibition: Nan Goldin: This Will Not End Well (Time-slot ticket required)
The retrospective at the Neue Nationalgalerie offers a comprehensive insight into Nan Goldin's work from 1980 to the present day. At its core is the artist's poignant exploration of identity, intimacy, and societal change. This exhibition provides a compelling perspective on the complex issues of our time.
